The 'Best' in our titles is a claim, and this is where we back it. Every score on the site is a judgment compiled from published documents — not a test result — and here is exactly how it is made.

The one thing to understand first

We have not cooked with these machines. There is no test kitchen behind this site, no unit on a bench, no dinner we pressure-cooked. Machines we claim to have tested: 0. Every score is a judgment built from what the manufacturer publishes and what the arithmetic shows — which means you can check all of it. That is the trade we are offering: not “trust our tasting”, but “here are the numbers and the sources, redo the ranking yourself”.

How we research a machine

Every ranking on the site is built from the same four steps, in order.

  1. Compile the published specifications.Rated wattage, usable capacity, working pressure or temperature range and its stated accuracy, and warranty term — each one cited to the manufacturer's own product page or manual, not a retailer listing.
  2. Do the cost-to-run arithmetic. Watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × your electricity rate, shown in full so a reader can redo it with their own rate.
  3. Aggregate verified-owner sentiment. Recurring themes from verified-owner reviews, always attributed to the source and never presented as our own hands-on testing.
  4. Mark the gaps honestly.Where a figure is not published anywhere we can cite, we write “not published” rather than estimate, borrow, or guess it.

The five metrics

Every machine is scored 0–10 on five things, and the overall score is their mean.

CapacityUsable capacity as the maker states it — quarts in a cook pot, cups of cooked rice, or the vessel size a circulator is rated to hold at temperature. The dimension that decides whether it suits your household.
DocumentationWhether the manufacturer publishes a wattage, a working pressure or temperature range, a capacity and a warranty term at all. This is unusual to score, and it is the most defensible thing here.
BuildConstruction as documented — the inner-pot material (bare stainless vs. a coated pan), the housing and seals, and the warranty length that stands behind them.
ValueWhat the price buys against the field — capability and capacity per dollar, not just the number.

Why Documentation is a metric

Because a brand that will not tell you what its machine draws, or how accurately its circulator holds a temperature, has told you something — and because on a site whose entire premise is checkable numbers, a machine you cannot check should not outrank one you can. A three-hundred-dollar appliance whose manufacturer publishes no wattage loses points to a forty-dollar one that publishes everything. This metric is the one most directly aligned with the reader's interest, and it is the one no competitor scores. Note that “Documentation” scores whether the brand publishes a spec at all — not whether we happen to like the spec.

How we compute running cost

Power in watts ÷ 1,000 × hours × your rate = dollars. We use 18.83¢ per kWh — the US average residential rate published by the EIA (US EIA, Electric Power Monthly Table 5.3 — average residential price, US total, April 2026) — stated on the page so you can substitute your own. Worked out for a 1,000-watt pressure cooker run for one hour: 1,000 ÷ 1,000 × 1 × 18.83¢ = 18.8¢ per hour. Every figure is computed at the full rated wattage, which makes it an upper bound: a pressure cooker, rice cooker or sous vide circulator draws its rated wattage only while it is heating up to pressure or temperature, then cycles the element off to hold it, so actual consumption is lower. We do not apply a duty-cycle correction because no manufacturer publishes one, and an invented factor would be exactly the unsourceable number this site exists to avoid.

How we source specs and prices

Specifications come from the manufacturer's own product page or manual, and each one on the site carries a link back to where it came from. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and stamped with the date they were last checked; if that data goes stale, the number disappears and the button falls back to “check price” rather than showing a figure we cannot currently verify. Our picks are chosen buyer-first and are independent of the commission — the commission funds the site, it does not order the list. Full detail is in the affiliate disclosure.

What we will never do

  • Invent a wattage, price, capacity, pressure, temperature or rating.
  • Claim we cooked with, tested, or owned a machine we did not.
  • Publish a review score in structured data — the on-page score is editorial, not a test rating, and it never enters the JSON-LD.
  • Let the commission decide a ranking. It funds the site; it does not order the list.
