Instant Pot Error Codes, Explained
An error message on the display is the pot telling you it stopped for a reason, not that it is broken. Most of the codes you will ever see mean one of three things: something is stuck to the base, the lid or valve is in the wrong position, or the pot never reached pressure. Here is what each one means and how to clear it.

An error code is a safety cutout, not a breakdown
Almost every message an Instant Pot flashes is a protection system doing its job— it has paused because a sensor read something outside the safe range, and it wants you to check before it carries on. That is a feature, and it is a big part of why a modern electric pressure cooker is so much saferthan the old stovetop kind. The codes vary a little by model and generation — your manual lists the exact set for your pot — but the handful below cover nearly everything a home cook runs into.
Burn / Food Burn — the most common one
This is the message people see most, and it is not really an “error” at all: the base temperature sensor read that the bottom of the pot is getting too hot, which usually means food is stuck to the base and scorching, or there is not enough thin liquidto make steam. The two usual causes are a thick tomato sauce that sank and caught, or browned bits left on the bottom after sautéing that were never deglazed. The pot cuts the heat to stop it burning further. The full walk-through — deglaze, layer thick sauces on top, use enough liquid — is in the Burn message guide, and getting the liquid right is covered in how much liquid an Instant Pot needs.
Lid — the lid is in the wrong position
A Lidmessage (or a lid symbol) means the pot cannot tell the lid is closed and locked in the right position for what you asked it to do. Lift the lid, set it back on, and turn it to the fully locked position — you should hear the tune or a click. On models where the same code appears when you press a pressure program with the lid off, it is simply reminding you to put the lid on and seal it.
noPr — it never reached pressure
noPr(“no pressure”) means the pot ran its pre-heat but could not build pressure within the expected time, so it gave up rather than run dry. The causes are the same ones behind a pot that will not seal: the steam-release valve is set to Venting instead of Sealing, the sealing ring is missing or not seated, there is too little liquid, or the lid is not fully closed. Check the valve and the ring first — those two fix the large majority of noPr messages.
OvHt and the sensor codes (C1, C2, C6, C6L, C7, PrSE)
OvHtis a straightforward overheat warning — often the same underlying situation as Burn (a dry or scorching base), so let the pot cool, check for stuck food and enough liquid, and try again. The lettered codes are different: C1, C2, C6, C6L, C7 and PrSE point to a sensor or electrical fault— a temperature or pressure sensor, or a heating-element problem — rather than something you did wrong. Unplug the pot, let it rest, and power it up again; if a lettered code keeps returning, that is the one time the message really does mean the pot needs attention, and Instant Brands' support (the pot is under a one-year warranty when new) is the right next step rather than another cook.
The quick triage: a wordon the screen — Burn, Lid, noPr, OvHt — is almost always something simple you can fix at the counter: check the liquid, deglaze the base, seat the ring, set the valve to Sealing, lock the lid. A letter-and-numbercode that comes back after a power cycle is the pot flagging a sensor or element fault, and that is a support call, not a recipe problem. When in doubt, your model's manual has the exact list for your pot — the codes are not perfectly identical across generations.

The cookers referred to above, with prices pulled live from Amazon and dated on every card. Full rankings live in the roundups linked from this page.

1,000 W
Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, 6 Quart
The multicooker that made the category, and still the right default. Instant Brands publishes the wattage, the working pressure range and a stainless (not nonstick) inner pot, which is more than most of the field manages — and it costs less than almost all of them.

1,200 W
Instant Pot Pro 10-in-1 Pressure Cooker, 6 Quart
The Duo's mechanicals with the interface fixed: a genuine sous vide program, an auto-sealing lid, grab-and-go pot handles and five programmable buttons. It draws 1,200 W rather than the Duo's 1,000, and Instant Brands does not publish a working-pressure figure for it — the one gap in an otherwise well-documented cooker.
